Sally,

I quite agree. Nothing can get settled by screaming and yelling. A constructive conversation is always best, and if there is a heated discussion it should never get elevated beyond strong words. The bottom line is, as in my title says, "the tender care" of our pets.

I understand the need for people to walk their pet and stop in to a store for an item or two. I don't understand people going into grocery stores on a windy night for over twenty minutes and leaving their dog tied to a pole, out of the owners sight, scared and helpless. Nor do I agree they should leave their pets while they have lunch or dinner. It's cruel and abusive.

Let's treat our pets as we'd hope they would treat us. With loving care, respect, dignity and compassion. Above all, let's think of their safety first - always.

Thanks for leaving your comments.

Best~

It's a polarizing issue in NYC. I take my two rescues with me when I run errands -- today it was to the bakery and to get some coffee. If I can't tether them where I can see them, where I expect it to be more than a five minute excursion, or where there aren't other people working outside, I won't leave them.

That said, when I went to get coffee today, things were busy and I chose to tether the dogs about 3' from where I usually tether them. There were other dogs and owners outside. When I got outside, things had quieted down...so my tethering decision may have appeared neglectful. What upset me was the woman who chose to chastise me about the decision to tether the dogs. She screamed and shamed me....I felt a bit like I was being yelled at by a pro-lifer outside an abortion clinic.

I understand that there are risks to tethering your pets while you run errands in the city....I also believe that most people use common sense. If you disagree with the practice; however, shaming the owner in a loud manner may not be the most effective approach. Say what you need to say with compassion -- for the pets and for the people --- it may make a difference....it may not. Shaming them is likely to just aggravate the situation.

I agree, Lisa. I've sat in parking lots waiting for the owner to return. I want to see if the animal is okay, and ask the owner how they could do that (especially on a hot day and the window is barely left open).

I know I am usually asking for trouble, but I have my conscience to live with!

Glad we are on the same page!

Best~

Thanks for re-posting my post, Janet.

I can still picture that dog's face as I was leaving for the restaurant. That is one image that will be hard for me to forget.

What can we do about it? Sometimes I feel so powerless. The laws are extremely lax in the area of animal abuse. I wish there was at least some kind of law on time limits for leaving your dog tied up to a pole. A 2 minute rule? Don't know how that'd be enforced, but it's a good thought, anyway.

Thank you, Mindy.

If people ran into a store to purchase one or two items - ok. Longer than that? It's out-and-out cruelty!

You hit the nail on the head. People should stop and think, "Would I want to be treated this way?" and if not, don't do it!

Thanks for your comments, Mindy.

You're a good soul, Cathy. So many people in the city do tie their dogs up, and honestly, I don't get it. I can't say I've ever seen a dog that looked happy lashed to a tree or parking meter. For a minute or two, ok, but anything longer than that is really unacceptable. I wouldn't do that to my kids, why would I do that to my dog?? Isn't anyone every afraid that their dog would be stolen?

Yes, Holly. I hate when people adopt dogs yet leave them outside, not allowed to enter the house. I know of one person who built a heated doghouse because they use the dog for hunting purposes only (which is a bit better than not being adopted, but I don't know how much more). Ugh. Others leave them on a chain on their property, never to enter their home. Inhumane. We need some legislation on this, don't we?

Thanks for your comments.

Cheers~

Exactly, Pat! I've witnessed that myself while in Europe. They value their pets, and know it's humane to bring them inside to enjoy the warmth and comfort with loved ones. Tsk, tsk on the good ol' USA on this subject!

Thanks for your comments, Pat.

I could not agree more! I also hate when urban dwellers tie or chain their dogs to a tree or stake in their yard. If you cannot afford to build an appropriate fence then don't get a dog! Grrr
