I think the ones that are affected the most are those that are extremely nearsighted or farsighted or those that got their glasses at an early age. A friend of mines daughter will not wear her correct glasses because her prescription is now -8.25 and she is so self conscious about how thick they are she will only wear her glasses from several years ago that are -6.50 and -6.25 and she can't really see to well with them. I have told her that very few people will really notice because they already know she wears glasses and if she gets high index lenses they will be thinner than the glasses she is wearing and people aren't going to notice or pay much attention to them, but she is convinced that everyone will comment on "how blind she is!" I also have a good friend who is very farsighted and his glasses make his pupils look huge and he is constantly taking off his glasses when ever he talks to someone :"so they aren't staring at his large eyes!" I have tried to talk him into getting contacts, but he has an aversion to touching his eyes and I think he has so many headaches because he takes his glasses off probably 50 times a day. I used to teach school and the kids that came in wearing their glasses for the first time and you could tell they were having a hard time with it, I would tell them, " today is going to be the hardest day in your life of wearing glasses, but if you just wear them with confidence and act like nothing is different within a week or two no one will remember you not having glasses and it will get to the point you don't even know you have them on! " It usually did the trick and over the years I have run into several of them and they thanked me for the pep talk and told me they have told their own kids the same thing when they started wearing glasses. It's not how you look in glasses but how you carry yourself while wearing glasses that is the difference. Sorry for the long reply.

Cathy, great story, I have been wearing glasses for years and have never had a problem having to wear them, although I might feel differently if I was as nearsighted as you are. I am one of those rare individuals who actually wanted to wear glasses from an early age (several siblings wore them and perhaps I felt left out) and I embraced them from the first day I got them. The only thing that got in the way, was that I was very shy and was self conscious at first being seen in them, but I was determined to get over it and after a few weeks with my new look I became very confident wearing my glasses and have never looked back! In addition to correcting my vision another benefit that getting glasses did for me was eliminate most of my shyness and made me a more confident person contrary to what they do for most people. Today I wear progressive bifocals and love them.

Great story Cathy. I use 'Readers' like 'Kleenex'. They are the ones to buy! I like the square rectangle shape on you. Isn't it great that you can have new fun looks inexpensively!

Great post Cathy and kudos on your first video blog! You look great. I have been wearing prescription glasses for years, but only started wearing them more when I was pregnant because my eyes got drier. I continued wearing them after having my daughter. When I wear contact lenses, I definitely need to use readers, so this is a great resources. Thanks.

Lois,

If my eyesight wasn't SO bad it wouldn't have been so awful for me. But my glasses are very thick (you saw them in Chicago!), and before they had the technology to shave the lenses down, they truly looked like Coke bottle glasses! Not exactly a magnet for boys to ask you out!

I hope your daughter is happily wearing glasses. As for you, it's amazing your sight is so good. Fighting it, eh?

Thanks for leaving your comments, Lois.

Hugs~
