Let's take this journey of being over the age of 50 together!

When I began to think about starting my blog, I became excited about reaching out to others who wanted to live life to the fullest after the age of fifty. Admittedly, I felt concerned I was joining blogging so late in the game. I had so much to say because I’ve had an autoimmune disease since I was 27. Before my diagnosis, I didn’t spend time thinking about my cholesterol or sodium levels, nor did I think about meditating peacefully. At the time of my diagnosis of MS, doctors used only traditional medicine for symptom management.   Can’t sleep?  Here’s a prescription for Ambien.  Can’t stay awake? Here’s a prescription for Provigil.  Feeling a little down?  Here’s a prescription for Prozac.  Each prescription was there to “help,” and each came with its own long list of possible side effects or addiction.

Alternative therapies such as yoga, t’ai chi, acupuncture, or guided imagery were unproven by science and, therefore, never discussed as part of a regimen for wellness.  Books about mind-body healing, stress reduction, and mindfulness were not as popular as today.  The “typical” medical advice for newly diagnosed MS patients was to go home, rest, and if you experience any symptoms, the doctor will prescribe steroids for a quick recovery.  Patients with other chronic illnesses experienced similar situations and heard similar medical advice. We’ve come a long way, baby!

Many doctors now discuss complementary medicine and how alternative therapies may be helpful.  An aging population uses the growing knowledge that yoga may reduce stress, acupuncture may ease pain, or meditation may increase energy.  The possibilities are endless.

My journey of self-discovery for a life of wellness is a week in progress.  I’d love you to join me on this journey so we can discover together how to live a life filled with good health and a sense of t al well-being.  Please feel free to post your thoughts and comments, or let me know any subjects you’d like me to discuss.  As Robert Browning said, “Grow old along with me!  The best is yet to be.”
