There are many reasons why I enjoy being a woman in my fifties. The freedom to be myself and the ability to chase the rainbow of my passions are the first two reasons that come to mind.
But trying to lose weight? That is not one of them. Why? Because nowadays it’s harder to take the weight off than it used to be.
When I was in my twenties or thirties and needed to lose a few pounds, I’d watch what I ate and burn up calories at the gym. The weight came flying off.
Now? It’s a hard s---l---o---w process.
I have to admit a big part of the reason the weight is coming off slower than I'd like it to is my own fault. I am not getting any exercise. These days it’s harder for me to get the exercise I need, and my job as a writer doesn't make it any easier.
Sitting in front of my laptop for long periods of time is not healthy.
Yes, I know. I have MS. For me that means I can’t run or walk fast or far, and my balance is shaky at best. I also have a frozen shoulder that, even after 8 months, is still very painful and limits my physical activities.
Those are all excuses. Because despite my disability I still have many abilities, and those are the ones I need to focus on and use if I want to keep losing weight and, in turn, feel healthier.
Leslie, my Jenny consultant, and I discussed how I could become more active. Walking seems to be the best option, so we decided I need a pedometer and begin a walking program to try and reach those golden 10,000 steps a day.
In the meantime I still have Jenny Craig in my corner. Not only with my weekly consults, but also with their delicious cuisine. This week their newest meal of Pizza Bites was not only delicious, but I also loved that there were three individual pieces. It felt good to know that after I finished one piece there were two more waiting for me!
Jenny Craig has made it easy to stay in control of my diet while learning new ways to become a healthier me.
So I’m ready for another week of Jenny Craig, and although I have a few social engagements, I feel confident that my week will be a healthier one because I'm stepping up my exercise routine and putting what I’ve learned at Jenny to work.
Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. I lost another pound last week!
What healthy changes have you made for yourself lately?
*I received a free month and discounted food on the Jenny Craig program for this review. There was no compensation. All opinions are solely my own. NOTE: Clients following the Jenny Craig program lose, on average, 1 -2 lbs. per week.
You know what they say: slow and steady wins the race. The important thing is that you are getting healthier and the scale is moving in the right direction. Keep up the great work!
Congratulations on losing another pound. They add up! I'm still working on averaging moving an additional mile a day. I'm also packing my lunch for work more often. It will pay off in the long run for both of us. Keep up the good work!
Cathy - You are doing great! Remember, slow and steady is the way to do it. You sound like you are very committed - and that's the key.
I so hear you on this, my weight has really been a thorn on my side for more years than I care to admit. Stress, age, medication and lack of motivation are all things that get in my way. When I put exercise in my life I feel better so I always get mad at myself when it's usually the first thing I throw out when my schedule and life get ahead of me. Thanks for the great reminder!
Good for you for emphasizing how important it is to MOVE! It's good for our hearts, our joints, our bones, too, as well as helping to maintain healthy weight. I'd probably be a more prolific writer if I could sit for longer periods of time, but I can't! Lovely post, my friend!
Slow and steady, my friend. Every ounce you lose is a big deal, and you are doing great!
I try to think of exercise (walking) as a health issue, not a weight loss issue - I'd like to remain active as I get older, and a sedentary lifestyle works against that. It's a challenge for me ALL the time!
Good work, girl!
Girlie, keep going! Every step taken, literaly and metaphorically, is one that will land you in the right direction. I know it's not easy....my metabolism has slowed down too! Ugh.
Just the fact you're focusing on it and making a concentrated effort on making a difference speaks volumes about the success you'll see. I'm proud of you! You didn't put it on overnight so you won't lose it overnight either, but losing it you will!
I have found the JUST DANCE 2014 a great way to exercise while having fun. And as a fellow MS-er, it can be easily altered to fit your energy level and ability (just keep those arms flinging and you get a "Perfect!" now and again!).
Cheers to getting fit and fine!
Good for you, Cathy. I'm so proud of you. With your determination and zest for life you can meet any challenge and overcome it.

Hi Cathy! I'm reading your blog.....again, because something about it keeps speaking to me! I know I should exercise, I know I'm over 50 so should be more aware and motivated to improve my health. I just don't like to exercise! LOL! (I know, who does!?) If you look at my life, I'm not, at all, a lazy person. Like everyone else, I feel better when I'm exercising. I start exercising and stay true for two or three weeks...then it falls off. (The exercising, not the pounds.) So! Thanks to your blog, I'm going to get and try hard to stay motivated, going to get a video and get started! I will stay tuned! Thank you and bless you!!
Sounds like a good plan for you. I know what you mean about writing getting in the way of regular exercise. I need to make a habit of getting up and walking more often during the day. Good luck, Cathy!
