How Is A Company UNCOMMON? By Making A Difference In The World

By Cathy Chester on April 20, 2016

I don't know about you but I'm grateful whenever spring arrives. My heart feels lighter and the world somehow seems happier. I feel as if I've jumped out of a black-and-white Ansel Adams photograph and landed onto the bold colors of an Annie Leibovitz portrait.

There's something else that happens in the spring. Life gets busier. My calendar fills up quickly with personal and professional events. With no more worries about traveling along icy roads or freezing in frigid temperatures I'm off and running. Okay, I'm off and walking...

This spring I've been invited to a few large health-related conferences and what's the first thing I think about? What to wear, of course. And which pair of shoes are the most comfortable. AND which bag looks professional to carry during the day that fits all the paraphernalia I schlep around. My bag would make Mary Poppin's bag look practically empty.

That's why I was thrilled when the nice people at Uncommon Goods asked me to review a few of their items.

I already knew the company by reputation, about their dedication to sustainability and integrity and the fabulous, artistic items they offer that are handmade, recycled and organic.

Plus I love their mission of giving to others every time a customer makes a purchase.

I immediately answered YES and then I virtually ran to their website to look for a handbag that fits more items than the one I own.

Since Mother's Day is around the corner I also thought it'd take a look at their gift suggestions for moms. From jewelry to pottery to more personal items such as handmade soaps or a sari robe, there's so much to choose from. I pored over each item not knowing what to get.

I love this floral batik kimono robe and thought it'd make a great Mother's Day gift.

I was impressed how uniquely crafted their items are, and how you can read the stories behind each artist. It makes every item even more special.

And with Father's Day on deck I took at look at what they had for men. It was easy to find what I liked since they offer ways of finding what you're looking for according to recipient, price or interest and a special category to shop their collection.

Twist wine decanter - "Dramatic curves aerate an entire bottle of wine twice: when you pour it in and again when you serve guests." Cool, eh?

There's something for everyone - sports enthusiasts, hipsters, chefs, ties, music lovers and more.

I always enjoy purchasing personalized items for people. It's a way of showing someone that you went that extra step to find something more meaningful. If you're like me you'll enjoy looking at their personalized gifts from alphabet books and photo prints to wedding vases and glassware.

Aren't these birth announcement pillows adorable?

Sorry Mom and Dad, but this time I ordered items for myself. (Don't worry....I'll be returning to the site soon!) I'm thrilled with my choice - a black and grey ombre tote that's spacious enough to fit my laptop and personal items and will also look professional yet chic. It's soft, durable AND has a matching crossbody clutch that's perfect when attending any professional event.

What a roomy bag and look! A matching crossbody clutch neatly fits inside the tote.

A bag within a bag to use together or each separately. I love the beautiful stitching on the crossbody strap and the purple lining. These bags are perfect.

But before I placed my order something else caught my eye. It was a vibrantly colored silk wrap bracelet with a metallic Sanskrit symbol meaning WARRIOR, or as the site says - to fight the good fight. I'd like to think of myself as a warrior, and I think most of us are. Wearing this bracelet will provide an extra reminder to stay strong despite any challenges.

It also happens to be a beautiful bracelet.

I hope you'll take a look at the Uncommon Goods website to find something special and unique for you and your loved ones. I guarantee you'll feel good about your purchase for two reasons: Your purchases will make you smile AND you're asked to choose a charity and the company will donate money on your behalf. It's a win-win. (I chose the people of Flint, Michigan.)

Happy Shopping!
