A New Interactive App To Make July 4th Less Scary For Your Pet (Giveaway)

By Cathy Chester on July 1, 2014

The other day I glanced out my window and jumped when, instead of gazing directly into the woods that is our backyard, I saw a beautiful Siberian Husky looking right back at me. He was gorgeous with his muscular body and blazing bright eyes.

Being a cat owner, I was at a loss at what to do about a lost dog. I noticed he was wearing a collar, but I didn’t have a leash.  I still had to do something, so I decided to go outside and try to get a closer look.

Equipped with a large bowl of water, I did my best to catch a glimpse at the information on his collar.  Happy and playful, he quickly slurped up the water, and then proceeded to jump at me several times, nearly knocking me over.

Then he ran away.

I never saw his owner looking for him during the twenty minutes that had passed. Can you imagine? I still wonder if he made his way home.  I’ll never know. With bear and coyote in our woods, I worry about that beautiful creature.

Our pets are part of our family, giving us the kind of unconditional love that is worthy of giving them the best care possible.

With the Fourth of July coming up (a scary holiday for many pets), the ASPCA has launched a new, interactive app to help us care for our furry friends.  According to the ASPCA, “nearly one in five pets goes missing after being scared by fireworks or other loud noises.”

This new app is free for download on both iPhone and Android, and is essential for all pet owners concerned about the safety of their pet.

If your pet goes missing, there’s a way for the app to trap its whereabouts according to the information you provide about specific circumstances and your pet’s individual personality.

Other useful tools:

  • Create a digital “lost pet” flyer ready to share throughout all of social media.
  • Advice about pet safety during a natural disaster.
  • A section to store information (vaccinations, dietary information) on your pet.

Don’t you think you owe it to your pet to get this exciting new app?  I know I’ll be using it for our 3 cats.  How about you?

GIVEAWAY: One lucky winner will win one pet safety kit provided by the ASPCA. It includes:

  • 1 durable zippered bag with compartments
  • A pair of scissors, tweezers and easy exam vinyl gloves
  • First-aid tape roll, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic cleansing wipes and ointment packs
  • Gauze dressing pads, trauma pads, wrap bandage, conforming gauze roll bandage
  • Eye pad, triangular bandage, eye wash
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Instruction guide including treatments for medical emergencies

To qualify, please leave a comment, and share this on either Facebook or Twitter. Contest ends July 4, 2014.  So hurry!

Enjoy your Independence Day knowing that you're doing all you can to give your pet the best care possible!

  1. What a fabulous idea. I would be devastated if my dog or cat went missing and this app would be the first thing I'd turn to. I sure hope that the Huskie's owner turned up.

  2. I love this giveaway! And it's funny, just a few hours ago I downloaded this app and I'm a big fan already.

Creating and/or buying a pet first aid kit has been on my "to do" list for a while...really hoping I win this 🙂

  3. This is a wonderful idea! I hope the app can alert others in the area so people can help in the rescue.

  4. We live in a semi-rural area and always have a ton of dogs come through our property around the 4th. Thankfully most of them have collars and tags.

  5. I hope he finds his family 🙁 I lost my huskey too and could never find him. I think with this new app people will find their dogs 🙂

  6. I hope he finds his home and I think with this new app people will be able to find their love ones 🙂

  7. This will be the chihuahua's first real year with fireworks. We lost our mini-dachshund last year; he loved fireworks. If you have seen the video where the mini-dach grabs the roman candle and runs with it. That was something mine would have done. Every time I lit a sparkler, he would bark at it, and try to grab it and extinguish it with his mouth. I kept thinking, you are going to blow yourself up! He thought it was a toy, and he loved toys.

  8. Our puppy is only 10 months old and gets scared during thunderstorms so we want to be as prepared as possible for the 4th. We live in a tourist/vacation area so there is going to be many times when he could get scared. The app will help us be ready.

  9. OMG. This is a brilliant idea.I don' t own a dog; I've had indoor cats. But I can see why this app would be a great tool for runaway pets.. Seriously. And for the record, I love the 4th of July fireworks in the sky, but I get skittish like a cat or dog myself! LOL.

  10. My Kloe isn't bother by fireworks at all...but if she sees another four-legged anything she is gone. We have her micro-chipped just in case but I think it's a good idea to use as any ways to keep track of her as possible. Thanks for this Cathy.

  11. I remember my moms dog growing up, we call her moms dog because they adored each other, she would hide under the end table during the fireworks. Poor thing.

  12. Living near a busy highway, I'm always scared our dogs will get dognapped! So, this app would hell tremendously! (You should really pick me for the prize)

  13. My cat doesn't go outdoors, so I don't need the kit, but I'm sharing this on my FB page for all of my animal-loving, pet-owning friends!

  14. I love this!! Our little dog is so afraid of loud noises and the 4th of July is a total disaster for her. We live in a beach community, so there are lots of fireworks in the harbor and at the zillion parties going on in the neighborhood. Downloading this app! Thank you!

  15. I've lost one pet in my life. Considering I've been owned by at least a dozen, I guess it's a good average. Still....even thought it's been 12 years, I think of him often and wonder what happened to our beautiful kitty, Pumpkin. Love the App idea. Anything is better than nothing at all! Thanks for sharing.
